The Story Behind Desk Topping
I believe our surroundings shape us more than we give them credit for. The rooms we move through change how we feel, how focused we are, even what feels possible on a given day. That belief locked into place early. At fourteen, I fell for film photography and started really looking at light, color, and composition everywhere I went.
For most of my career, that sensibility lived alongside a very different one. I spent fifteen years in the analytical, fast moving world of corporate strategy and marketing, the kind of career that rewards logic over instinct. It wasn't until we bought our first home that I got to put both sides of myself to work at once. For the first time, I could choose the paint colors, the floors, the light fixtures, the rug in every room, and I loved every minute of it. I began to understand, in a very tactile way, how considered design could make a house feel like it was actually for the people living in it.
That understanding came home with me when, like so many people, my job did too. I was suddenly spending nine or ten hours a day in one room, more time than anywhere else except my own bed, and I started asking the same questions I'd asked about every other room in the house. Was it lit well? Did it feel calm or chaotic? Was I proud of it, or just tolerating it? Once I started asking, I couldn't stop, and I noticed the same questions applied everywhere our family's life gets managed: the kitchen counter, the table by the front door, the drawer that swallows every school form and stray charger.
That's the gap that stuck with me. Plenty of brands make beautiful things for a home, and a few do organization well, but almost none of them had really looked at the desk, specifically, as a place that deserves to be both functional and genuinely well designed. So I built the thing I kept looking for.
Desk Topping started with the pieces I use every day, chosen because they made my own desk feel calmer and more like me. It's still built that way today, one considered piece at a time, with more of my own designs on the way. Because the space where you tackle your to-do list deserves the same thought as the rest of your home.
